The Origin and Development of Indian Writing System

Author : Naren Ranadive
The history of writing in India goes back to the 3rd millennium BC as is evident from the seals and clay pottery fragments bearing short inscriptions discovered in various parts of India[1]. These seals and various artifacts are known to belong to the ancient civilization of Indus Valley; the mature phase of this civilization is recognized as Harappan Civilization, spanning period between c.3500 and 1700 BC. Unfortunately neither the language of Indus people is known nor the relationship of the Indus script to any other ancient scripts has yet been established.

Substantial changes in Brahmi character was taking place in   central India during the 7th century. Harshavardhana’s inscriptions (606 –647 A.D.) are in Siddhamatrika script, which is more akin to early Nagari than late Brahmi. Vardhanas of Thanesar were successful in eradicating the Huns who had penetrated in Madhya Pradesh by 6th century. Their inscriptions ( Toramana’s Eran Boar inscription and Mihirkula’s Gwalior Inscription) are in Sanakrit written in Gupta-Brahmi. The territorial conquest of Rajyavardhan and later success of Harshavardhan against the Saurashtra and Malwa kings in west and Shashank in east and with matrimonial connection with Maukhari’s of Kanouj ( Harsha’s sister Rajyashri married to Maukhari king) a large land mass of northern and central India came under his control. Now the capital was moved from Thanesar to Kanauj, which became administration as well as cultural center of Harsha’s Empire. The script in the empire was predominantly Siddhamatrika, although the south of Vindhya late Brahmi was in vogue. After the death of Harshsvardhan his empire disintegrated into many smaller kingdoms and Kanouj was repossessed by Maukharis. Here an example of Siddhamatrika is illustrated by first couplet from Nalanda stone inscription of Yashovarman. For complete inscription see Sircar’s selected inscriptions (28C.)

By the end of 12th century, Devnagari script as we use presently was established. The first two lines from copperplate of Kasheli Grant of Shilahara King Bhoja II (1191 A.D.) are given below as an illustration. For further information see “Inscriptions of Shilahara”  No.60 (34b).

Devanagari Script foremorely used to write Saurashtri. It is written from left to right. Devanagari is the script of Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, Nepali. From 19 Century, Sanskrit used this Devanagari script for writing.

Today, Devanagari alphabets used to writhe; Bhojpuri, Gujari, Kashmiri, Pahari, Magahi, Maithili, Marwari, Bhili, Newari, Santali, Shepra, Sindhi, Sourashtri, and Tharu.

Devanagari is a part Brahmic family script of Bharath / India. An early insecription of Devanagari found Vikram Samvat 1049 (992 CE) which shows horizantal bar for grouping words in devanagari writing system.

Government of India, having a alphabet/script chart called Parivarthitha Devanagari Script, which is represent all unique sound / pronounciations of miniroty Language of India .

From this chart, any minority language can adopt their script / akshar / varnamala.

From 2004 Tamil Nadu Sourashtra people approached Central Institure of Indian Languages, and Linguistic Minority Officers, to ask guide their long pending desire, the impliment Minority Sourashtra language in writing system.

And few alphabets eliminated because of rare in use. And Six letters / alphabets added due to requirement of Sourashtra language. A Short a (ye) and short o added in vowels, nah, mah, lah, rah added as special sound/pronounciation in consonants of Sourashtra language.

Though there was a question arised " Why we migrants of Saurashtra living in Tamil Nadu, does not aware of our own Writing system. and why not we brought lipi / akshar / eluthu / alphabets / letters of sourashtra?
For many reason we does not aware our Sourashtra-Writing system. One is On those days, before one thousands years we migrated form Saurashtra, literacy percentage is very low, and a comman man does not having necessary knowledge of writing his mother tongue. Second reason, The writing knowledge is necessary only for Kings, who Assisting King and Rulers who assisting to the King. In History, The Nagar Brahmans of Saurashtra developed the Devanagari letters and they used these alphabets to write their language.

In the mean time, Tamil Nadu sourashtra community, especially ONLY from Madurai, one person developed a own script, and it was followed for time sack. But as per tradition and cultural linage, Devanagari script is the most suitable one.

Before one hundred and ten years ago, Sourashtra Madhya Saba passed a resolution, that
" Devanagari lipi is the alphabet of sourashtra and our community children will thought education with this devanagari script. " However no efforts made to impliment the resolution. After a long time, finally Sourashtra community proclaimed and adopted Devanagari is their Writing system with the Guidance of Central Institute of Indian Language, Mysore and Linguistic Minority Commission officials.
